American on Costa Rica

I give credit when credit is due. 3 things for the moment:

1) The Costa Rican economy seems to have gotten a shot in the arm as of late from increased tourism. A friend of mine (yes, I have friends you assholes) in the tourism industry told me he's been working like crazy to keep up with the increased reservations for American tourists coming here. Another friend in the states told me that the travel agents are pushing CR once again. (There was an advisory against sending tourists to CR a year ago because of violence and robberies targeting tourists.) So far, the tourism plan is working.

2) The police have stepped it up and the courts are beginning to throw the book at these repeat and career criminals. One gentleman just got 25 or 30 years for his tendancies to constantly be robbing someone.

3) Somehow, traffic seems to be flowing a little better. Maybe it's because some of the re-paving projects have been finished and some roads have been updated. It's not that big of a deal to drive around town anymore.

Truthteller...I honestly can't say too many bad things about the "Land of Opportunity". If Mr. Winkle (www.mrwinkle.com ) can go from homeless to the top of the world in 24 short months, than anyone can reach their dreams if they believe in themselves and really give it their best shot. To me, the U.S. represents unlimited opportunity. It's crazy how much opportunity there is. And there's enough for everyone too, if they truly pursue it.

Actually... I myself was happy to see plans for an expansion of the Highway that goes from La Sabana to the Airport....

I read in the news the project was being outsourced to a Spanish Consortium that will expand that highway from 4 lanes to 6 lanes! The same consortium is algo to undertake other projects. This is set to begin in the year of 2005.

We move at a snail's pace, but us Ticos are finally getting more and more involved in demanding better living conditions.

I see a lot of jobs being created with all the investment coming in, and it is only getting better.

Let's keep the faith!

Interesting comment Tico, seems foreign investment has declined in the last year and the competitiveness for CR for foreign capital has fallen drastically. You say you see more? Maybe the government is not stealing as much of it?

Ok, not to be overly critical, but one thing I have noticed in the 5 years I paid attention to CR is that whenever something is going well, it falls apart. On the other hand when all hope is lost, things improve. Maybe it is human nature, when the government sees things getting so bad they finally get serious. When things are going well they get greedy and ruin the party.

What is most sad about it is that you have to say "people are demanding better living conditions". A democracy like yours certainly shouldn't be so jaded that it takes getting fed up before you demand better conditions.

I think it's a good thing that so many more Ticos are demanding better living conditions. Before, people in CR just accepted substandard conditions as the "way things are here", but now people are starting to realize that many things could be improved on and that their quality of life could be raised. They are beginning to realize that it doesn't have to be constant traffic jams, crime all over the place, buses spitting out black smoke, everyone walking around with no money in their pockets. Somehow, it seems the Ticos are finally swallowing a little of their pride, trying to be objective about their social problems and come up with some solutions. There was a time I though the wheels were going to fall off this place, socially speaking.

One thing I think is a shame is how these insane import taxes are choking off businesses and absorbing much of the buying power of the Ticos' wages. The vast majority of CRican people make low wages to start with, and when a pair of Nike's that costs $60 in the U.S. costs $170 here, that just plain SUCKS. Not to mention the import tax on cars. These 1994 Hyundais that are going for $3500 here, would collar about $800 in the states. You hardly ever see them in the U.S. cause they ship all those 10 year old shit boxes out to countries like CR, because that's the only thing most people an afford because of the import tax.
